The Nakuru County Government, in collaboration with the Agrochemicals Association of Kenya (AAK) and other partners, joined the rest of the world in commemorating World Environment Day 2026 at Egerton University Grounds in Njoro Ward, Njoro Sub-county, under the theme “Inspired by Nature: A Global Call for Climate Action.

World Environment Day is observed annually to raise awareness and inspire action towards environmental conservation, climate resilience, and sustainable management of natural resources. The day provides an opportunity for governments, institutions, organisations, and communities to reflect on their role in protecting the environment and mitigating the impacts of climate change.

The event highlighted Nakuru County’s commitment to environmental conservation, restoration of degraded ecosystems, and promotion of sustainable agricultural practices. Through partnerships with various stakeholders, the county continues to champion initiatives aimed at increasing tree cover, enhancing biodiversity, and strengthening climate resilience among local communities.

Speaking during the event, Egerton University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Isaac Kibwage underscored the importance of environmental conservation and sustainable land management in addressing climate change. He noted that institutions of higher learning have a critical role to play through research, innovation, and community engagement, while fostering environmental stewardship among young people. He commended the partnership between the county government, development partners, and local communities in advancing climate action.

Speaking on behalf of the County Director for Environment and Climate Change, Grace Karanja, county officials emphasised the need for collective action in safeguarding the environment. They called upon residents to embrace tree growing, sustainable land use practices, and responsible management of natural resources as key measures in addressing climate change and securing a sustainable future.

As part of the celebrations, over 2,000 tree seedlings, including fruit and indigenous tree species, were distributed to farmers to support afforestation efforts, improve livelihoods, enhance food security, and contribute to environmental sustainability. The seedlings are expected to play a significant role in increasing tree cover across the county while providing economic benefits to farming households.

In addition, more than 1,000 trees were planted within Egerton University grounds in a practical demonstration of the commitment by stakeholders to restore ecosystems and combat the effects of climate change. Participants from various institutions joined hands in the tree-planting exercise, reaffirming their dedication to environmental conservation.

The celebrations also served as a platform for sensitising communities on climate change adaptation, environmental protection, waste management, and the importance of partnerships in achieving sustainable development goals. Participants were encouraged to become environmental ambassadors within their respective communities and institutions.

The event brought together county officials, development partners, environmental stakeholders, students, farmers, and members of the public in a united commitment to environmental conservation and climate action. Joining the celebrations were officials from the Department of Agriculture and Livestock led by Director Shelmith Mucoki, representatives from the Agrochemicals Association of Kenya (AAK), Egerton University officials, environment officers, school administrators, and partners including Dandelion Africa, PROTO, iClear, among other stakeholders committed to promoting environmental sustainability and climate action.

The county government reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with partners and communities to advance environmental conservation efforts, increase tree cover, and build a climate-resilient future for the people of Nakuru County.
